Date: 9th August 2019 session-2
In this session, our faculty member Mrs Solange Suri had introduced us to the concepts of gestural drawing. We were taught the concepts of continuous line drawing and drawing with flat strokes. We were shown images and were assigned in the class to practice rapid sketching of 5mins 2mins and 30seconds of the images displayed.
We were also assigned the task to make 20 sketches of people in public places and to take 10 landscape photographs of day and night 5 respectively.
Through her guidance, I learned that drawing is primarily about learning how to and what to look at first. Observations are necessary before trying to get into the details of the drawing. I was always under the impression that drawing was all about being artistic and visually pleasing but now I realized that it is a part of a later stage of drawing after the basics are cleared.
Before design school, I was never exposed to drawing and I was not able to artistically articulate myself.
These are my first few attempts at rapid sketching.

Here are in-class drawings of the individuals placed in the middle of the class to model for our sketches

Here are some of the drawings after the rapid sketching exercise.

Given below are 10 live sketches that I made at the gym, the gaming area, library and jogging track sitting area. It was a tough but fun experience as the individuals whom I sketched had various reactions to my drawings some of them were sceptical some of them were enjoying being drawn in motion some of them were interested and were happy to volunteer. By doing this I realized the difficulties in trying to capture moving people on paper and trying to get basic gestures right.

Session-3
In this drawing session, we were instructed to print out 5 night and 5 day time landscape pictures. We were taught the art to render and use techniques such as hatching and cross-hatching to fill into our respective landscapes. I learnt to trace out drawings from images on tracing paper and to then redraw them on paper. It was a tough and tedious task for me to do at first as I am not very well acquainted with the art of landscape drawing and my sketches were not very accurate as per my images. I tried to represent my drawings to the best of my abilities as close as it could get to my printed photographs.
Session 4
In the following Drawing lesson, we were taught the concept of linear drawing. In this lesson, I comprehended the difference between sketching lines and drawing lines. The former being rough lines used as a guideline for the more prominent lines and the latter being controlled finished strokes.
According to me, this type of drawing requires immense focussed strokes along with the correct choice of micron pen.
In this session, I did not perform to the best of my abilities as I was rushing through my strokes and was using the wrong type of pen since the start.
Now that I’ve realised my mistakes I will make the corrective measures soon.
Session 5
In this drawing lesson, we were expected to bring different 5 different types of leaves in the various stages of decay and draw them with the following techniques that we taught to us that day- Cross Hatching, Stippling and Scribble Drawing.
In the scribbling technique, I tried my best to not lift the pencil from the paper and go along with the stroke. In my first try, it was a little tedious to do so but with my second attempt, I got the hang of it and was somewhat able to highlight the essential features.
According to me, my cross-hatching sketch was not satisfactory and I need to develop on that. I also found the stippling technique a bit tough as it was not easy to represent and highlight the essential features in the first few tries.
