Integrative Studio Week 8

“When you judge others, you do not define them, you define yourself”

― Earl Nightingale

This Studio Session was a tough and long day. Today, our Section had a peer review on the final model presented by us representing our chosen metaphors and our true selves.
I started by mentioning that It was a tough and long day. Let me justify my statement. Critiquing the work of our peers was a challenge as we are all subjected to many biases. Biases such as closeness towards a person, similar ideologies and the overall perception and valuation of another individual’s work.
I found it tough to value others work as I was as well subjected to these biases in some way or another.
In this Studio Lesson, I learned or at least tried to learn the art of patiently listening to others while they present their work and concepts even when they in some form or somewhat contradict my beliefs.
It was even tougher for me to evaluate one’s work and justify their scores as neither did I have the experience nor was I any better than my peers work. I tried to be as honest and fair with my assessment and gave the entire class an average score ranging from an 11-17 out of a 20 depending on my understanding of quality work in terms of concept, presentation and finishing work.
When it was my turn to present, which was last, I realised how difficult It is to speak up in front of a class and present my model for critique and questioning. I tried to be as clear conceptually, which was ironically in contrast to my messy handwork on the file card models. In my opinion, I could answer the questions that were asked but I needed to work much more on my craftsman skill. During this review I also gained a lot of perspective on my model from my friends and my faculty which was an important step to understanding and bettering my design work.
