Teachings: In the following Objects as History lesson, we were told about Thalassocracies, The Pheonicians(2500-550BC), the first people to develop the alphabets(22 alphabets, all consonants). We learnt about the dark ages, The damascus steel, The empire of Byblos(2500-1000 BC), Tyre(900-550) , The Social structure of the Pheonicians, The Sea peoples, The Late Bronze Age collapse 1300BC-1200BC.
Critical Reflections: The following lesson was an interesting lesson which led me into thinking about how history repeats itself in many contexts, and what if there were better technological advancements in the ancient eras than what there are today. Questions such as : How did people back then with far less machinery and chemical knowledge be able to develop the Damascus steel? and why is it that it cannot be replicated today even after having reached the peaks of advancement in chemical technological spheres.? I was also very interested with the topic relating to the sea peoples and the collapse of an entire civilization within the short span of about 50 years. This lecture was one where my imaginations went through many theories trying to reason with such mind boggling facts that don’t seem to quite add up even after thorough research from scholars and experts in the field.
