Work assigned: Previously after our Integrative Seminar Class, We were instructed in out Integrative Studio class to start making mind maps on the main design stream of our choice and two other streams that we felt were complementing the stream our choice. Then in the following Integrative Seminar Class we were to be split up into groups according to our preferences and were to look at others mind maps and add points that we believe we had missed out and to eliminate points that we believed were not a part of that particular stream. We were also appointed to write down essays for what we learnt on the stream our choice.
Process: In the following Integrative Seminar Class, I had a few heated debates with my classmates on some aspects that I believe were important part of the stream of my choice. After the intervention and life example of my faculty member I had realized that the aspect that i was looking at was a complementary aspect to my field but was not in the essentials required by the industry and were infact in the domain of another industry altogether.
My essay on Strategic Design Management:
After looking at all the aspects entailing my first stream preference, I realized that this stream entails a lot of research work, It is very closely related to the domain of User experience and interaction design which is also offered under communication design. After further reading I also realized that this stream entailed looking at aspects such as product life cycle management which then correlates which the stream of product design. I , in particular was very fascinated with the design thinking and strategy aspect of this field and I am keen to study this aspect further in the years to come. After reading a lot of design books such as “The Art of Innovation” and “Change By Design” I realized the importance of things such as service and experience design that I had seen was offered under this particular stream before but not quite understood until I had read about it. I also looked at it with context to the “Parts of A whole” and started creating relations where this stream of design was interlinked with other streams and other fields altogether. I understood the underlying importance of design thinking and strategy before and after the making of products, communication visuals or any services. I also keenly look forward to the entrepreneurial side of design and while creating the mind maps I started to gain some clarity and I started to understand myself and evaluate my skills and interests and started looking towards the stream that fit both right. Coming from a business background and having a bent of mind more towards selling rather than creating, I now realized that I have an inclination towards this stream a little more over the other two as I am innately a calculative person who always tries to look at profit, strategy and I tend to be better with my researching and problem solving skills as compared to my craftsmanship skill(material handling skill) or my visual representation skills (drawing and visualizing). I therefore having understood the key aspects of my preferred stream and its complementary streams now believe that I have started narrowing down my choice more towards Strategic Design Management over the others.
