Work Assigned and Teachings : After making our mind maps in the previous class, we moved forward to the elements within our disciplines. We were given a brief idea about the project that would be due for our 15th week submissions. We were to ask ourselves this question, “Till when can we manipulate a part while retaining the function that it performs?” We had to select a specific part within our disciplines, and make mind maps on it. We were also briefed about what an Inquiry Question is, how it is different from a knowledge question and were told that we had to come up with an inquiry question along with a visual essay of our research in the next class.
Process: Up until now i was still confused with the discipline that I wanted to work with in my second year. therefore I had created three mind maps expanding on three elements from the streams of Communication Design, Strategic Design Management and Product Design, I looked into Animation and VFX under Communication Design, Design Thinking and Strategy under Strategic Design Management and Internet of Things under Product Design.
Reflections: While doing this exercise I realized the elements that I did not want to explore from each stream and therefore I started narrowing down my specialization choice in a much more efficient manner. I then evaluated each stream and I realized where my interests lie and where my abilities as an individual lie and in which stream I could add the most value. I also started looking at the elements and gathered more in depth information from each of them to start forming my inquiry question. I had done my information gathering up until this stage from all the knowledge that the faculties had shared with me and from my readings such as “Change By Design” by the CEO of IDEO Tim Brown.
